The differences in this Red is not by any great different path chosen, but by the company that he had growing up and his personality as a result. Back in the days of Pallet Town, it wasn't just Red and Green making sparks fly between each other in their boyish ways, but there was a third to make their duo a trio, a girl by the name of Leaf.
Red's Leaf was a very spunky girl, a total tomboy. Friendly, excitable, energetic. Loved to talk. Red and Leaf got on much better than the two boys did, their closeness later being one of the neverending reasons for a young boy with a troubling attitude to have a bigger troubling attitude. Not that Red really knew why, but in the end, it didn't really change anything for Red as he favoured them both equally.
Because for Red, even as Green became more and more disagreeable growing up, his two best friends were always them and nothing could change that for him. Green had always been harder for him to read, communication and openness a problem in their general relationship, but it was hard for the Oak boy to push Red away for too long.
Which he did start to do during the "Bully Stage" of his life. And to Leaf, too. The two, however, tried their best to stay in his life. It was a struggle. But the promises they had made to become Pokémon Trainers hadn't been forgotten, and while there was a change of plans (their Pokémon journey missing the boy alongside them), Red and Leaf were adamant to fulfil that promise and, hopefully, meet Green at every chance they could get.
Not a hard thing to do when you've got a rivalry going on with the guy. Seeing that Green would be waiting for them looking for a challenge, it became one of the most important aspects of Red's trainer journey. It was natural, too. Red was always looking for a chance to prove himself to Green, and their battles were one of the only ways the two could connect with each other anymore.
Team Rocket still became a major part of it too, and taking them down whenever they were seen being up to no good (as criminal organisations are usually up to). Red wasn't the lone figure up against them though, Leaf being by his side.
Leaf and Red ended up parting ways after the Indigo Plateau and Red beating Green to become the champion. Leaf's heart was in the travel of being a trainer, and Red had admittedly become very involved in the battles and becoming stronger. Staying in one place turned out to not be fun though, so he ended up relinquishing his title and leaving for a more constant exposure to challenge than just the not-occasional enough trainer visit looking to take his place.
So he ended up travelling Johto. Forgot about contacting anyone and ended up on Mt. Silver after being allowed access to it due to his skill, and he's been there ever since training. And being a reason to climb the mountain for battle thirsty trainers.
Notes
» In his world, he had two childhood friends; Green (link) and Leaf (link).
» The rivalry between Red and Green was a very Boy Thing; Red was into it because he liked proving himself to Green
» Had a falling out with Green, but bugged him a lot anyway with Leaf (they didn't want him to make himself lonely, but. well.)
» Travelled with Leaf; both she and Red tried to get Green to come with, but he wouldn't
» So they followed him; Red focused on being his rival and trained to challenge him (though essentially, Red and Leaf trained together)
» They took down Team Rocket together, too.
» Went to the Indigo Plateau, Red beat Green as usual. It was when Red became champion that Red and Leaf split, Leaf deciding to continue travelling. Red stayed at the Plateau for a while, then decided to go travelling too.
» Ended up in Johto, blah blah up on a mountain. Ended up training there for years.
» Is dumb and has no idea where Leaf is or Green. Actually, he doesn't even know Green has a gym. HE DIDN'T MEAN TO SPEND THREE YEARS ON A MOUNTAIN, IT JUST HAPPENED...
Personality: Three years on a mountain, surrounded by nothing but hardened monsters and layers upon layers of snow. The number of actual humans who found themselves on there in all that time could be counted on one hand. But a young man, only 14, has made his home here. Somebody like him, one might believe him quiet, withdrawn; stoic, even.Weird.
But if you want to use any of those in regard to him, you might want to reconsider. That is, at least, for this Red. Isolation on a mountain for so long might give a different impression, but actually, the boy from Pallet Town is quite a cheerful and social boy. And chatty. He's up for entering a conversation with any person that wants to chat, gives friendly waves and nods to those that he passes. There's nothing really unapproachable about Red - unless you're up to obviously nefarious deeds, but in that case you probably expect a less than warm welcome from most people.
So, Red's more extroverted than introverted, but he's learnt to deal with keeping by himself long enough to not be too bothered by a lack of civilisation. When he has his quiet moments, they're usually due to something heavy being on his mind that needs his attention. Such times are far and few inbetween though, and he'll usually welcome to them being interrupted by company.
Because as explained, Red really doesn't mind people. Actually, he would be quite into the idea of sitting down and listening to others about anything, about their hobbies or their goals. Loves it! He can usually chat back as good as people give it too, even leading to one-sided conversations if he's well and comfortable enough with the person (though he's fine with piping down and keeping quiet, too). Having travelled with Leaf in the past brings on a need to fill in the dead air with some kind of noise if he's with someone and it's quiet, even if it's just humming or whistling a tune.
As into people Red is though, he can be described as a person who can get lost in his own world, absorbed by his personal goals. It was what took him to Mt. Silver in the first place, and kept him there for so long: to become strong with his Pokémon. He can be taken out of his own little world with some help, finding the time in the first stage of his Pokémon journey to go after Team Rocket, a criminal organisation (though back then, he didn't have the focus on being a great trainer as he does later in life). Though such run-ins hadn't been on purpose, actually very accidental and thrust upon him, they helped to be part of what helped shape Red's confidence in putting himself in the most unlikely of situations.
So we can say that Red has courage. Courage, and maybe stubborn determination. What else could it be that would keep such a young boy on top of a lonely mountain for so long? But lonely isn't quite the right way to describe it, for Red wasn't alone: he had his Pokémon. These creatures can't be ignored when looking at every part of Red, for it certainly wasn't him who was doing the punching on that mountain. 'Pokémon have to battle to grow'; apparently for Red, simply journeying and taking on trainers and gym leaders wasn't enough to do this. It shows a level of trust and the bond that the Pallet trainer must have with his Pokémon though, to take on such unpredictable conditions. Truly, the amount of love and dedication Red has for his team cannot be taken lightly.
What else? Red isn't a person who forgets people or things easy. He's a sentimental person, and he holds the relationships he does make close to him. Sure, this is the same guy who doesn't call his mother ever, but we shouldn't take his lack of a presence to mean that he's a cold-hearted dude who doesn't give a hoot about anybody. He just needs a smack on the head to remind him about things outside of whatever grabs his hold, particularly when what he's lost in is the training of his team. (Really, the guy can get carried away with his goals when he's got them.)
But he'll remember a face, a deed, a name, much better than most. Of course, keeping a move on means that it's likely that faces will become fuzzy and hard to recall, but just give the young man a few clues and it's sure to come back to him. Route so and so? Hey, yeah, and there was that thing...!
If Red can't remember you though, he'll be honest - because honesty is something that Red likes to provide. Lying doesn't sit well with him, especially not when it's coming out of his own mouth. He'll do it when necessary, or he'll tell a(n obvious) lie in a joke, but otherwise, it rubs Red the wrong way.
Red can accept it to a degree, however. If somebody chats about something completely out there and outlandish, he won't question a person too hard. At times he sounds as if he'll believe anything he's told, but Red isn't really that gullible. If there's a reason for a person deceiving others, then he's likely to try to get over it.
All in all, Red is a guy who likes to get along with others, but can deal with being by himself, too. Once he forms a close bond with somebody he tries to put anything into keeping it that way, though he can at times become careless and lose thought of the world around him. He means well more often than not, however.
Just don't ask the guy for the time or date. He will rarely know.
Notes
» Cheery, extrovert, likes chatting and doesn't mind having company
» But can deal with being on his own
» Tries to be thoughtful, to take things - and people - seriously
» Accepts a lot of what people say, whether it sounds outlandish or not (not to say he'll actually believe it)
» Likes listening to people too; likes to turn around discussions onto people and their interests
» Teasing at times, but won't go too far (this can be more reserved for people close to him)
» Goal-driven, but he can get carried away when left to his own devices (like holing up on a mountain for three years, whoops)

[ The face that shows up on this orb might look familiar for a second to some, red eyes and light skin with the facial shape similar to another resident of the world, but it's brown hair on this guy's head than black. That hair right now is currently being ruffled on one side, clearly damp. ]
So, that entrance. Portal in the air and landing in the lake is the norm? Someone should see about getting that moved, right? Seriously. [ He laughs, sounding far from bothered. He moves the towel to sit round his neck, a smile on his face. ]
I like the creatures though- dragonflies? He's- uh, she? It? [ he looks to his, hovering beside him ]-- well, they're cute. And everyone's got them floating them around? So it sounds like in the book.
[ he looks off-gemscreen, probably at said book. ] It's a good thing they have those ready for you too, or I'd be confused about what's going on! Well. More than I am, but - jumping from one world to another's a pretty confusing thing. [ he shrugs. ] For me it is, anyway.
Well, whoever or whatever thinks I've got some way of helping them with their problem, so I guess I'm stuck here like the rest of you for now. [ he nods. ] The name's Red; I'm a Pokémon trainer. I've seen some Pokémon around here, so that means something to somebody else here, right?
[ There's nothing else he says after that. he's silent, looking up for a second, but looks back at the gem with a shrug of his shoulders, ]
Uh, well, that's all I've got. [ a laugh, followed by a grin. ] See you around, I guess? "Talk to you later"?
[ gem phoning is weird. ]
Third-Person: "Wo-wooooooah!"
Red had experienced plenty ungraceful landings in his life, some (most) of his own doing than not, but stepping outside a cave, losing the ground underneath to the skyand landing straight down into a lake of all places--
Well, not only did that all result in a lot of flailing and sudden yelling, it shot up as the most strangest experience in the Kanto boy's life. Not that he had the time to reflect on that, not straight away, with the whole falling out of the sky part. After he hit the water, what came next - after the gurgling and the reaching for air - was the search for land. And then the coughing, the shock, the "What the-"s...
Red lifted himself out, weighted by the water that drenched his clothes and belongings. His bag came off first to help him move, then his mind raced to his Pokémon and their Pokéballs- thankfully still there Red was relieved to find out, with a touch to his belt and the metallic spheres that contained them.
It was then, with a cap off his head and a damp fringe pushed away from his eyes, that Red finally soaked in more than the water of the lake. The scenery around him, bright with the sun and not the white of the snow, green and -- wait, was that a building?
He blinked, shook his head and looked again, amazed and wondering if this was some kind of illusion. Did he make eye contact with a Drowzee and get put to sleep? Eat something funny? But as he sat dazed and confused, paused in the moment as he tried to figure out what was going on, nothing really... happened. It was quiet, but quiet in the way where sounds could be heard in the distance and it didn't feel odd. Odd like- magic, like whatever it should feel. Just time ticking away, paying no mind to any person lost in the world.
Actually, what Red realised was... that it was a pretty nice day, wasn't it?
Not content with just sitting and taking in the nice weather, the trainer picked himself onto his feet, He gave the place one more look before wiping down his arms with a hand and then squeezing out the front of his jacket, then sighed to himself when he felt the wetness of his hands. Great. Great. What was even going on, anyway? When stuff like this happened, wasn't there supposed to be, he didn't know - something more? Standing there, was starting to feel even insulting how - how casual the day was being. Like he didn't belong in it (probably because he didn't) and was intruding on a perfectly natural day (maybe because he was).
A "uh, Hello?" didn't provide any answer back either, though Red wasn't sure how unfortunate that was. But more and more, it looked like he'd have to simply go out and find the answers, wouldn't he?
Well, Red could do that. He took Espeon's ball from his waist, clicking on it to resize it to its natural state to ready her for release.
Time to find out what was going on.And then dragonflies and books show up and wow.
